Men's Basketball Falls In Overtime At Methodist, 86-85

FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Christopher Newport's men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaking 86-85 decision in overtime at Methodist Saturday afternoon.

The Captains led by 10, 62-52, with 9:18 left in regulation on Davon Barton's three-pointer. CNU however could not hold off the Monarchs or Robert Lee. Lee scored 21 of his 23 points in the second half, including a bucket with 29 seconds to go in regulation to put his team up five.

However, CNU would storm back and score the final five points of regulation and force the extra session. Korey Lewis was responsible for all five points as the senior forward hit a lay-up with 20 seconds to go to cut the lead to 74-71. After a quick Captain foul, the Monarchs went to the line and missed the front end of a one-and-one situation. At the other end of the floor, Lewis banked in a three-pointer from the top of the key with three seconds left to force the extra session.

In the extra session, the Captains missed two free throws where as Methodist sank all six of their attempts. Antwin Shuford's bucket with nine seconds left turned out to be the game-winner. After a time out with 1.1 seconds left, Barton's in-bounds pass was knocked away giving Methodist the win.

Lee finished with 23 points and five steals to pace the Monarchs. Adrian Bascom added 19 points.

Lewis finished with a career-high 27 points on 11-of-16 shooting, including his one three-pointer. Lewis was also 4-of-6 from the line. Barton finished with 15 points and eight assists, Theo Baker added 15 points off the bench and Donta Selden contributed 13 points and 7 helpers.

CNU falls to 11-7 overall and 3-2 in conference play. Methodist improves to 7-10 overall and 2-3 in the USA South.

The Captains return to action Sunday as they travel to Greensboro with tip set for 4 pm.
