Men's Basketball Sneaks Past Greensboro, 67-65

GREENSBORO, NC - Christopher Newport's men's basketball team concluded its two-game road trip on a positive note as the Captains knocked off the USA South's top team, 67-65, Sunday afternoon

CNU trailed 36-30 at the break and trailed for the first six minutes of the second half until Davon Barton drained a three-pointer with 13:55 left in the second half to put the Captains up one, 44-43.

After several ties and lead changes, the Pride would bounce back ahead by four, 55-51, with 9:26 remaining on two Lynn Bright free throws. CNU would answer with a 7-0 run to lead by three, 58-55, on Mark Blasingame's jumper in the paint with seven minutes to play.

The Captains would go on to increase their lead by as many as six down the stretch. Barton's jump-shot with a minute to play put CNU up 66-60. The Pride would challenge with a three-pointer on the ensuing possession and then forced a Captain turnover. GC came down and hit a lay-up with 12 ticks to go. Barton would then be fouled and he made one of two at the line with eight seconds left. After the missed free throw, Donta Selden picked Bright's pocket, who came down with the rebound, to give CNU the win.

Bright paced the Pride with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Adam Nicholson added 13 points and Bruce Zamuel finished with 11 points.

Barton led the Captains with 16 points and eight assists. Korey Lewis added 13 points and 10 boards while Ed Riley and Mark Blasingame each finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.

Greensboro falls to 14-5 overall and 4-2 in the conference. The Captains improve to 12-7 and are in a first place tie with the Pride in the USA South standings.
