Men's Basketball Drops Ferrum, 97-89
FERRUM, VA - Christopher Newport's men's team concluded its final road trip on a positive note Sunday as the Captains defeated Ferrum 97-89.
The Captains got off to a great start in the first half taking a 46-33 lead into the locker room at the intermission. CNU was crisp from the field, finishing the opening stanza 18-of-32 (56%) from the floor, 5-of-8 (63%) from behind the arc and 5-of-6 (83%) from the charity stripe.
Christopher Newport played solid defense in the first half as well, limiting the Panthers to just 11-of-33 (33%) shooting from the field, 4-of-10 (40%) from downtown and 7-of-11 (64%) from the stripe.
Ferrum's Keith Harris had the hot hand in the first half from behind the arc. The senior, who was honored before the start of the game on Senior Day, had 12 points in the first half, all coming on three-pointers. He was 4-of-7 from long range.
For CNU, Korey Lewis and Ed Riley paced the Captains to their 13-point halftime lead. Lewis was 4-of-9 from the floor, including draining a three-pointer and hitting three of his four free throw attempts for 12 points. Riley was 5-of-6 from the floor for 10 points.
In the second half, the Captains led by double figures for most of the way. The biggest lead CNU had was 20 which came early in the second half. Christopher Newport kept the game in double figures for the majority game until late when Ferrum tried to make a run and cut the lead to as few as six. But by then, it was too late.
For the game, CNU shot a sizzling 34-of-60 (57%) from the field, 8-of-14 (57%) from behind the arc and 21-of-29 (72%) from the free throw line. The Panthers shot 33-of-80 (41%) from the floor, 6-of-18 (33%) from downtown and 17-of-25 (68%) from the charity stripe.
FC was lead by Harris' 23 points. Cedric Jones added 21 points and 14 rebounds while Rob Fuller contributed 10.
Christopher Newport was led by Korey Lewis' career-high 30 points on 11-of-19 shooting. He also had 13 rebounds. Davon Barton finished with 21 points and nine dimes. Theo Baker contributed 16 points off the bench while Ed Riley had 13. Mark Blasingame added eight points, 14 rebounds and three blocks.
Ferrum falls to 10-14 overall and 4-7 in conference play. The Captains improves to 14-9 overall and 6-4 in the USA South.
CNU returns to action Friday as they host Methodist with tip set for 7:30 pm.
