Men's Basketball Falls To Greensboro, 96-86

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's men's basketball team dropped a 96-86 decision to Greensboro on the final day of the regular season.

The Captains will be the No. 3 seed in next week's USA South Conference Tournament that begins Tuesday. CNU will host NC Wesleyan with tip set for 7:30 pm in a quarterfinal game.

The Pride had the hot hand early, often and in the end. GC shot 54% from the field for the game, including 21-of-36 (58%) from the floor in the opening half, including 7-of-9 (78%) on three-pointers. GC led at the break, 52-36.

Christopher Newport shot well but Greensboro had the upper hand on its offensive end as they could not miss. The Captains improved on their shooting in the second stanza, finishing 17-of-33 (52%) from the field. CNU trailed by double figures for the majority of the second half, but was able to get the lead down to nine three times mid-way through the final half. The Pride was able to thwart any CNU attempt to cut into the lead any further.

GC was led by Lynn Bright's 26 points and 15 rebounds. Adam Nicholson added 23 points and seven assists and Bruce Zamuel contributed 15 points.

Davon Barton paced Christopher Newport with 18 points and seven assists. Donta Selden and Mark Blasingame finished with 17 points each. Blasingame also added 12 rebounds. Theo Baker had 13 off the bench and Ed Riley added 10 points.

Greensboro, the tournament's No. 2 seed, improves to 19-6 overall and 9-3 in conference play. GC will host Shenandoah in a quarterfinal match on Tuesday at 7:30 pm. CNU falls to 15-10 overall and 7-5 in the USA South.
