Men's Basketball Falls At No. 18 Lincoln (PA), 102-96
LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA - Christopher Newport's men's basketball season came to a close Friday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the No. 18 Lincoln (PA) Lions used a 15-2 run to close out the game with a 102-96 victory.
LU scored 61 points as a team in the second half, 27 of which came from All-American guard Kyle Myrick, the nation's leading scorer, who finished with a game-high 44 points.
The Captains led by seven, 94-87, with 4:33 left in the game on a bucket by Mark Blasingame. Lincoln outscored the CNU down the stretch and held the Captains to just two points in over the final four and a half minutes to advance to the second round where they will meet Messiah Saturday at 7 pm.
Christopher Newport led 48-40 at halftime on 17-of-39 (44%) shooting from the floor, 4-of-8 from behind the arc and 10-of-12 (83%) from the free throw line. The Lions were 16-of-40 (40%) from the field, 0-of-13 from behind the arc and 8-of-10 from the line.
In the second half, Lincoln outscored CNU 61-48. The Lions were 21-of-41 (51%) from the floor, 6-of-13 (46%) from beyond the arc and 14-of-19 (74%) from the charity stripe. The Captains were 18-of-38 (47%) from the field, 3-of-9 on threes and 9-of-11 (82%) from the stripe.
For the game, CNU finished 35-of-77 (46%) from the floor, 7-of-17 (41%) from behind the arc and 19-of-23 (83%) from the free throw line. LU was 27-of-81 (46%) from the field, 6-of-26 (23%) on threes and 22-of-29 (76%) from the free throw line.
Myrick finished 16-of-31 from the field, including 2-of-9 from behind the arc and 10-of-11 from the free throw line. He also dished out nine assists and grabbed 10 boards. Bryant Leach contributed 19 points and eight boards, Tyreek Byard had 18 points and Darryl White had 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The Captains were paced by Korey Lewis and Jeremy Romeo's 19 points. Edward Riley added 18 points and nine boards off the bench. Dont'a Selden added 14 points and Mark Blasingame added 12 points and 10 rebounds.
CNU finishes the year 20-8.
