Men's Basketball Holds Off Frostburg St., 92-84
NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's men's basketball team outscored Frostburg St. 15-6 over the final four minutes to come from behind and defeat the Bobcats 92-84 Saturday afternoon in the Freeman Center.
The Captains trailed 78-77 with 4:15 left in the game before reeling off eight straight points to take an 85-78 lead with 1:39 left. The Captains hit their free throws down the stretch for the final margin.
CNU led by 10, 42-32, at the break before the Bobcats came out firing from long distance. Frostburg St. had not faired well from behind the arc all season, hit its first four three-point attempts in the second half and took the lead for the first time in the game since it was 3-0, on Jade Belt's bucket to put the Bobcats up 67-65 with just over nine minutes to go.
Frostburg led by as many as five, 76-71, on Keith Hazel's three-pointer with 5:25 left in the game. From there, the Captains finished the game on a 21-8 run to capture their fifth straight win.
The Bobcats hit on 9-of-15 from behind the arc in the second half after shooting 1-of-10 in the first half. Frostburg's cold shooting allowed the Captains to lead by as many as 18, 37-19, on Davon Barton's thunderous dunk with 5:43 left in the opening stanza.
The Bobcats closed the half on a 13-5 run to trail by 10 at the break.
It was a tale of two halves for Frostburg, as they shot 13-of-44 (30%) from the field and bounced back to shoot 19-of-41 (46%) from the floor. They finished 32-of-85 (39%) for the game. Free throws plagued the Bobcats as they were just 10-of-18 for the game.
The Captains had consistent shooting numbers in both halves. They were 17-of-33 (52%) shooting in the first and 15-of-29 (52%) shooting in the second half. CNU finished 32-of-62 (52%) for the game. CNU was just 2-of-12 from behind the arc but shot 87% (26-of-30) from the charity stripe.
Frostburg was led by four players in double figures. Leading the way with 19 points each were Brian Greene and Hazel. Greene also had six assists. Antoine McCall added 11 points and eight rebounds and Dale DeBerry finished with 10 points.
Six players finished in double figures for CNU. Barton led all Captains with 19 points and eight assists. Donta Selden finished with 17 points and Mark Blasingame had 16 points, a career-high 15 rebounds and six blocks. Blasingame finished with his fourth double-double in a row, a mark that hasn't been accomplished since Antoine Sinclair did it in 2001.
Korey Lewis added 14 points and six boards, Ed Riley added 13 points and eight rebounds and Theo Baker finished with 13 points off the bench.
Itis the first time six players scored in double figures since the Captains defeated Fisher, 103-72, back on Janurary 7, 2006.
Frostburg St. saw its four-game losing streak snapped and falls to 4-5. The Captains improve to 5-2 on the year. CNU returns to action Dec. 20 when they take on John Carroll at 5:30 pm on day one of the Greensboro Classic.
