Men's Basketballs Falls 72-71 To Fisk On Day Two Of The Greensboro Classic
GREENSBORO, NC - Christopher Newport's men's basketball team had the ball in the final seconds with a chance to win the game, but CNU turned the ball over with two seconds to go and dropped a 72-71 decision to Fisk on day two of the Greensboro Classic Thursday evening.
The Captains cut the lead to two, 72-71, with 59 seconds left on two free throws by Theo Baker. On the ensuing possession, Fisk turned the ball over and the Captains called timeout with 26 seconds left. CNU then proceeded to turn the ball over with 14 seconds to go and had to foul being down by one. Fisk's Marcus Patton missed the front end of a one-and-one. Of the miss, Head Coach C.J. Woollum called another time out. After the time out, Donta Selden's pass was deflected and stolen by Fisk to end the game.
Christopher Newport was down by as many as 11 in the second half, 47-36 with 16:44 to play. The Captains battled in the middle part of the period as they went on an 18-2 run to lead by five, 54-49 with 10:38 to go on Kelvin Franklin's lay-up off a missed Fisk three-pointer.
The Captains led by five once again with 8:29 left on two Korey Lewis free throws to put CNU ahead 58-53. The Bulldogs scored the next nine points of the game to lead 62-58 with 6:44 left in the game. The Captains would tie the score at 62-62 on Selden's fast break bucket with 6:01 to go. Fisk would go on an 8-3 run to re-take the lead 70-65 with 3:34 to play. CNU would cut the lead to one with 2:35 to go on Ed Riley's lay-up. The Bulldogs would then extend its lead back to three with 1:08 left to go. On the next possession, Baker hit two free throws for the Captains setting up the final minute of the game.
Fisk shot 18-of-32 (56%) from the floor in the first half, including 2-of-5 from behind the arc and 2-of-2 from the line to lead the Captains 40-32 at the break. CNU shot 13-of-26 (50%) from the field, and was also 2-of-5 from long range but were just 4-of-9 from the charity stripe.
For the game, Fisk was 31-of-63 (49%) from the floor, 3-of-12 (25%) from long range and 7-of-11 (64%) from the stripe. Christopher Newport was 29-of-56 (52%) from the field, 3-of-9 (33%) from behind the arc and 10-of-16 (63%) from the line.
Patton led the Bulldogs with 21 points, Jonathon Pillow added 13 and nine rebounds and Thurloo Pearson finished with 12 points.
Korey Lewis led the Captains with 19 points and eight rebounds in 37 minutes of action. Mark Blasingame contributed 15 points, Selden finished with 14 and Ed Riley had 13 points and nine boards.
Fisk improves to 2-8 on the year while CNU falls to 5-4. The Captains are off for the next eight days and return to action Friday, Dec. 30 against this very same Fisk team. CNU and Fisk will meet on day one of the Captains Shootout with tip-off set for 7:30 pm.
