Men's Basketball Earns 86-74 Win Over Fisk

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's men's basketball team halted a two-game losing streak with an 86-74 win over Fisk Friday evening in the Captains Shootout.

The Bulldogs had just defeated the Captains 72-71 in the Greensboro Classic just eight days ago.

CNU was solid in the first 11 minutes of the game as they led by as many as 22, 36-14, with 9:12 left in the opening half on Davon Barton's three-pointer. However, Fisk would not go quietly and go on a 17-4 run to cut the lead to nine, 40-31, with 2:52 remaining on Michael Glaze's tip-in. The Captains would close the half on an 8-2 run to lead by 15, 48-33.

The Captains held Fisk to just 14-of-45 (31%) shooting from the field in the opening half, including missing on all eight three-point field goal attempts. The Bulldogs did hit all five free throws attempted. Christopher Newport shot 16-of-33 (49%) from the floor, including 5-of-11 from behind the arc and 11-of-14 (79%) from the charity stripe.

Barton had a solid first half, finishing with 19 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-4 from long range and 6-of-8 from the stripe.

In the second half, Fisk scored the first 10 points to cut into the Captains lead. The Bulldogs trimmed the lead to as few as five, 48-43 with 17:28 to play. The closest Fisk would get in the second half ended up being four, 61-57 with 12:36 left in the game on Marcus Patton's lay-up. CNU answered any late spurts by the Bulldogs by hitting seven free throws over the final four minutes to secure the win.

It was a tale of two halves for both teams. Fisk rebounded nicely in the second half to shoot 15-of-35 (43%) in the second stanza. The Bulldogs sank all six free throw attempts and drained 5-of-14 (36%) three-pointers. CNU, on the other hand, was just 12-of-31 (39%) from the floor, 4-of-11 (36%) from long range and 10-of-16 (63%) from the stripe.

For the game, Fisk finished 29-of-80 (36%) from the floor, 5-of-22 (23%) from outside and 11-of-11 from the charity stripe. Christopher Newport was 28-of-64 (44%) from the field, 9-of-22 (41%) from downtown and 21-of-30 (70%) from the free throw line.

Patton led the Bulldogs with 22 points and seven rebounds. Glaze contributed 18 points and nine rebounds and Jonathon Pillow, who fouled out with 10:45 left in the game, added 17 points and 12 boards.

Barton led all scorers with a season-high 29 points for CNU. He finished 8-of-16 from the floor, including 4-of-8 from long range and 9-of-12 from the line. He also added seven assists. Mark Blasingame finished with 15 points and a career-high 19 rebounds. Donta Selden had 14 points and Korey Lewis finished with 13 points and eight boards.

Fisk falls to 2-9 on the year while the Captains improve to 6-4. The Bulldogs will take on Greensboro Saturday at 3:30 pm on day two of the Captains Classic. Christopher Newport will take on Oswego St. at 6 pm. Greensboro defeated Oswego St. in Friday's first contest, 85-82.
