Men's Lacrosse Comes From Behind To Defeat Fontbonne, 9-8
NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's men's lacrosse team came from four goals down to defeat Fontbonne 9-8 at Captains Field Saturday afternoon.
The Captains trailed by as many as four twice in the second half and found the back of the net five times in the final quarter, with Ryan Merrell's goal with 1:53 left forcing the extra session.
In overtime, Merrell scored the game-winner unassisted just 1:37 into the extra session to give Christopher Newport its third straight win.
CNU led 2-1 before the Griffins scored twice to lead 3-2 at the end of the first quarter. In the second period, Fontbonne scored twice more to take a 5-2 lead at the half.
Fontbonne scored first in the third to lead 6-2 but the Captains managed one score to cut the lead to three at the end of three quarters of play.
Merrell cut the lead to 6-4 just 17 seconds into the fourth quarter but the Griffins answered to extend the lead back to 3, 7-4 with 12:25 to play. Fontbonne's final score came with 11:03 left in regulation to take a four-goal lead once again.
Christopher Newport scored four goals in the final 9:36, including Merrell's game-tying score with less than two minutes left.
Merrell led the CNU attack with four goals. Michael Turk added one score and three helpers while Mike Burns and Logan Keyser each finished with one goal and one assist. Chris Quigley and Eric Huggins added one goal a piece.
Ray Ralph made 11 saves in goal. CNU out-shot the Griffins, 47-28.
The Captains are now 3-0 on the year while Fontbonne falls to 0-3. CNU returns to action Wednesday as they host Medaille at 3:30 pm.
