Men's Soccer Selected To Finish First In USA South Preseason Poll
FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Christopher Newport University's men's soccer program was picked to finish first in the 2006 USA South preseason coaches poll released Wednesday.
The Captains finished 12-7 overall and 4-2 in the USA South for a third place finish in the regular season. CNU defeated Shenandoah 2-1 in double overtime in the quarterfinals before dropping a 1-0 decision to Greensboro in the semifinals.
CNU returns 18 letterwinners from a year ago and lost just one starter from last year's squad. The Captains received five first place votes for 35 points while NC Wesleyan finished with two first place votes and 32 points.
The Captains kick off the 2006 campaign on Friday, Sept. 1 in the Joe Pombriant/CNU Classic. Methodist takes on York (PA) at 5 pm and CNU hosts Johnson & Wales at 7:30 pm.
