Men's Soccer Captures USA South Regular Season Title, Ties NC Wesleyan, 1-1 In Double Overtime
ROCKY MOUNT, NC - Christopher Newport's men's soccer team captured its first USA South regular season title since the 2000 season by tying NC Wesleyan 1-1 in double overtime Saturday afternoon.
The Captains took a 1-0 lead in the second minute when Michael Caro crossed a ball into the box that was headed into the back of the net by freshman Kevin Greenberg.
The Bishops knotted the score at 1-1 in the 42nd minute when Lucas Fuentes scored off a corner-kick.
NC Wesleyan out shot the Captains 22-11. Matt Tengs, for the third straight contest, set a new career-high for saves in a game. He finished with 13.
The Captains will have a bye into the semifinals in the 2006 USA South Conference Tournament, which CNU will host next Friday and Saturday nights.
Christopher Newport improves to 13-4-1 overall and 5-0-1 in the USA South. The Captains are now 8-0-1 in their last nine matches. CNU will host the winner of the 4/5 game between Methodist and Shenandoah on Friday night.
