Men's Soccer Shuts Out Methodist, 5-0, Advances To USA South Tournament Championship
NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's men's soccer team advanced to its first USA South Tournament championship in three years with a 5-0 win over Methodist in a semifinal match Friday night.
The Captains opened the scoring just 16 seconds into the start of the game. Derek Shaw flicked a pass to a wide open Michael Caro who slipped it past a diving Methodist goalkeeper for his 13th goal of the year. Shaw gave CNU a 2-0 lead in the 11th minute when he ripped a shot from 40 yards out for a score.
CNU would tack on three more goals in the second half. Daniel Fogarty's 12th goal of the year came on a penalty kick just 1:01 into the second half. Bryan Davis scored on a free kick from 35 yards out in the 71st minute and Andrew McCoy put home a rebound off a free kick from Kyle Martin in the 87th minute.
Christopher Newport out shot the Monarchs, 10-5. Matt Tengs had two saves in goal for the Captains while Methodist keeper Jeremy Belnap finished with two saves as well.
Methodist finishes the year 14-5-1. The Captains, who are 9-0-1 in their last 10 matches, improve to 14-4-1 and will meet Greensboro, a 2-1 double overtime winner of NC Wesleyan, in the championship of the USA South Conference Tournament Saturday at 7 pm.
