Men's Tennis Slips Past Dickinson, 5-4

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's men's tennis squad escaped Dickinson with a 5-4 win on the CNU Courts Saturday afternoon.

The Red Devils were coming off a 6-3 win at Methodist on Friday.

In singles action, No. 17 (Atlantic South Region) Eddie Glidewell (CNU) defeated Whit McFarlane 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1; No. 15 John Mook (CNU) defeated Rich Rosenthal 6-0, 6-0; Hunter Holbrook defeated John Braig (CNU) 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3; Dylan Young (CNU) defeated Pavel Hejsek 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (8-6); Trevor Heck defeated Steve Myers (CNU) 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 and Eric Schroeder defeated Kevin Repper (CNU) 6-1, 6-3.

In doubles competition, No. 8 Glidewell and Mook (CNU) defeated Andrew Kastner and McFarlane 8-1 at No. 1; Hejsek and Holbrook defeated Braig and Myers (CNU) 8-1; David Weiner and Dylan Young (CNU) defeated Jackson Parmenter and Eric Schroeder 8-5 at No. 3.

Young and Hejsek's singles match lasted nearly three hours amid snow flurries to give the Captains the win, as they were the final match to finish. CNU began the day by winning two out of three doubles matches. Glidewell and Mook quickly defeated their respective opponents to give the Captains a 4-1 lead. The Red Devils bounced back and won a trio of straight-set matches leaving Young and Hejsek as the only match left on the courts.

In the final set, which featured lots of wind and long rallies, Young trailed 0-2, went ahead 5-3 but lost his serve in the ninth game, then held for 6-5. Hejsek held serve to force a decisive tiebreaker and overcame three match points at 6-3 in the breaker to get to 6-all, but Young won the final two points to complete the victory.

The Captains improve to 5-0 on the year while Dickinson falls to 5-3. CNU heads to Baltimore, MD Sunday to take on the region's fifth-ranked squad, Johns Hopkins, at 2 pm.
