Softball Clinches USA South Regular Season Title, Sweeps NC Wesleyan
NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's softball squad, ranked tied for 10th in the nation, swept NC Wesleyan and in the process, clinched the USA South regular season title and the No. 1 seed in next week's USA South Tournament.
The Lady Captains won game one, 7-5.
Janet Fairchild improved to 12-1 on the year by tossing six innings. She allowed three runs, one earned, on five hits, walked one and struck out four. Kristen Rowe closed out the seventh for the win.
Margit Severin was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Jamie Jansen finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI.
In game two, Christopher Newport won 10-2 in five innings.
Kristen Bruce went the distance to pick up win number nine on the year. The freshman allowed two runs on three hits, walked one and whiffed five.
Severin led the way going 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Mary Kennedy was 2-for-3 with a triple and Becky Bond went 1-for-3 with three RBI.
NC Wesleyan falls to 18-10 overall and 7-7 in conference play. The Lady Captains, who jumped up four spots in this week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association's top 25 poll, improve to 29-6 overall and 12-1 in the USA South.
CNU concludes the regular season on Friday as they host Division II Chowan at 3 pm.
