Women's Basketball Rolls Past Ferrum, 87-64

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's women's basketball squad rolled to its third straight win Saturday afternoon by defeating Ferrum, 87-64, in a USA South contest.

The Lady Panthers took an early 4-2 lead with 18:05 to play in the opening half. Nikki Rowland tied the score at four-all just 15 seconds later. Two free throws by Colandra Rollins with 16:03 remaining in the first put CNU on top for good.

The Lady Captains led by as many as 12, 27-15, with 9:47 left in the first half. Christopher Newport took a nine-point, 45-36 lead into the locker room at halftime.

CNU dominated the second half, much like the opening stanza. After shooting 50% from the field in the first half, the Lady Captains shot 16-of-27 (59%) from the floor in the second half while holding Ferrum to just 31% shooting.

For the game, FC was 22-of-66 (33%) from the field, 5-of-14 (36%) from long range and 15-of-18 (83%) from the line. CNU was 34-of-63 (54%) from the floor, 2-of-3 from behind the arc and 17-of-25 (68%) from the free throw line.

The Lady Captains forced 25 Panther turnovers and turned them into 30 points. CNU also finished with 14 fast-break points and out-rebounded Ferrum, 45-33.

Tonya Wright led Ferrum with 15 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Ashley Norton added 12 points and Ali Davenport finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Alicia Bessey paced Christopher Newport with career-highs in both points (25) and rebounds (10). She finished a sizzling 10-of-11 shooting from the field. Rowland and Samantha Davis each finished with 14 points while Rollins added 13 points, six rebounds and four steals.

The Lady Panthers fall to 10-5 overall and 3-1 in conference play. The Lady Captains improve to 9-6 overall and 3-1 in the USA South. CNU returns to action Tuesday as they host Averett at 5:30 pm.
