Women's Basketball Powers Past Shenandoah, 90-65

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's women's basketball team scored 55 points in the first half en route to a 90-65 win over Shenandoah Wednesday evening.

The Lady Captains dominated the first half, leading by as many as 34 and taking a 55-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Christopher Newport was 21-of-35 (60%) from the field in the opening stanza and 13-of-16 (81%) from the free throw line. CNU limited the Hornets to just eight field goals in the first half on 32 attempts (25%), including 3-of-11 (27%) from behind the arc and 5-of-12 (42%) from the free throw line.

The two teams played pretty equal in the second half. CNU was 16-of-37 (43%) from the floor, 1-of-1 from beyond the arc and 2-of-4 from the line. SU was 14-of-29 (48%) from the field in the second stanza including 5-of-11 (46%) from long range and 8-of-11 (73%) from the free throw line.

The Lady Captains largest lead came midway through the second half when they went ahead 76-41 with 11:53 to play in the game.

Overall, Shenandoah finished 22-of-61 (36%) from the field, 8-of-22 (36%) from behind the arc and 13-od-23 (57%) from the line. Christopher Newport was 37-of-72 (51%) from the floor, 1-of-1 on three-point attempts and 15-of-20 (75%) from the stripe.

Alicia Sanders led SU with 22 points and Cassie Womack added 13 points and 11 rebounds.

CNU was paced by Candace Bryant with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Nikki Rowland and Alicia Bessey each finished with 16 points and Colandra Rollins added 15 points and 11 boards.

SU has now lost four in a row and falls to 11-7 overall and 4-4 in conference play. The Lady Captains are now 12-7 overall and 6-2 in the USA South.

CNU returns to action Saturday when they host Peace at 2 pm.
