Women's Basketball Upends Peace, 69-59

RALEIGH, NC - Christopher Newport's women's basketball team won its fifth straight Saturday afternoon by defeating Peace College in USA South play, 69-59.

The Lady Captains led by as many as eight points in the first half, 15-7. Peace cut the lead to four at halftime, trailing 31-27.

CNU finished the half 13-of-34 (38%) from the floor, 0-of-2 on threes and 5-of-7 (71%) from the free throw line. The Pacers were just 7-of-25 (28%) from the field, 2-of-3 on threes but were 11-of-17 (65%) from the free throw line.

The Lady Captains quickly out scored Peace 13-7 to start the half to increase their lead to 10, 44-34 with 15:15 left in the game on a jumper by Tiffany Artis. CNU would go on to lead by 15 numerous times, with the final time being up 66-51 with 3:31 left in the game on a bucket by Dee Luck.

CNU was 13-of-28 (46%) from the field, 1-of-3 on threes and 11-of-20 (55%) from the stripe in the second half. The Lady Captains held Peace to just 13-of-37 (35%) shooting from the floor, 1-of-6 from behind the arc and 5-of-10 from the charity stripe.

For the game, the Pacers finished 20-of-62 (30%) from the floor, 3-of-9 from beyond the arc and 16-of-27 (59%) from the line. Christopher Newport was 26-of-62 (42%) from the field, 1-of-5 on threes and were also 16-of-27 from the free throw line.

Peace was paced by Tia Saunders 20 points (18 in the second half) and 13 rebounds.

The Lady Captains were led by three players in double figures. Candace Bryant finished with 23 points and tied a season-high with 14 rebounds. She's now just seven points away from recording her 1,000th point. Colandra Rollins contributed a career-high 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting and 5-of-9 from the free throw line. She also grabbed seven rebounds. Nikki Rowland finished with 15 points and four helpers.

The Pacers are now 11-8 overall and 5-4 in the USA South. Christopher Newport improves to 13-7 overall and 7-2 in conference action.

CNU returns to action Tuesday as they host NC Wesleyan with tip-off set for 5:30 pm.
