Women's Basketball Runs Win Streak To Six, Downs NC Wesleyan 64-55

NEWPORT NEWS, VA — Christopher Newport's women's basketball team quickly jumped out to a 10-point lead and never looked back en route to the Lady Captains 64-44 win over USA South rival NC Wesleyan Tuesday evening in the Freeman Center.

The Lady Captains sprinted to a 14-4 lead just six minutes in on a Shannon Perry three-pointer. Of the team's first seven field goals, five were three-points for CNU.

Christopher Newport would lead by as many as 16 in the first half, 31-15, with 3:40 left in the half on a three-pointer by Shantel Burwell.

The Bishops Kacie Sprankle would cut the lead to 11, 31-20, with 13 seconds left, where the score would remain at the half.

CNU would hold NC Wesleyan to 7-of-31 (23%) shooting in the first half, 1-of-6 from behind the arc and 5-of-9 (56%) from the free throw line. The Lady Captains were 12-of-36 (33%) from the field, 6-of-9 from beyond the arc and 1-of-3 from the line.

Christopher Newport held NC Wesleyan scoreless for the first six minutes of the second half while CNU went on an 18-0 run before the Bishops got on the board.

NC Wesleyan finished 9-of-26 (35$) from the floor in the second half, 2-of-5 from behind the arc and 4-of-5 from the line. CNU was 14-of-38 (37%) from the field, 0-of-2 on threes and 5-of-9 from the stripe.

For the game, the Bishops finished 16-of-57 (28%) from the field, 3-of-11 (27%) on threes and 9-of-14 (64%) from the free throw line. The Lady Captains were 26-of-74 (35%) from the floor, 6-of-11 (55%) from behind the arc and 6-of-12 from the charity stripe.

NC Wesleyan was led by Cheyenne Hall's 11 points and 10 rebounds. Sprankle and April Wilson added 10 points each.

Christopher Newport was paced by Burwell's 14 points and seven rebounds. Colandra Rollins added 12 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Nikki Rowland added 11 points and Michele Russell finished with 10 points and seven assists.

The Bishops are now 2-17 overall and 0-10 in the USA South. CNU improves to 14-7 overall and 8-2 in the USA South.

Christopher Newport returns to action Saturday as they host Averett beginning at 2 pm.
