Women's Basketball Rolls Past Methodist, 63-48

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's women's basketball team rolled past Methodist Friday evening by a score of 63-48.

The Lady Captains scored the first nine points of the game and held the Monarchs scoreless for the first four minutes of the game. Methodist would battle back in the half, cutting the lead to two, 19-17, with 8:46 to play on Antoinette Holliday's bucket and free throw.

CNU closed the half on a 13-7 run to take a 32-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Captains would increase their lead to double digits, where it would remain. The largest lead CNU would enjoy would be 20 points when Colandra Rollins' bucket with 8:24 left to play gave Christopher Newport a 52-32 lead.

MU finished the game 20-of-52 (39%) from the field, 2-of-8 (25%) from behind the arc and 6-of-9 (67%) from the free throw line. CNU was 27-of-64 (42%) from the floor for the game, 1-of-7 (14%) from downtown and 8-of-13 (62%) from the line.

Ashley Harris paced the Monarchs with 17 points while Holliday added 13 points and seven boards.

Alicia Bessey led the Lady Captains with 14 points off the bench. Nikki Rowland contributed 12 points and Dee Luck finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and eight blocks.

Methodist falls to 13-11 overall and 7-6 in the USA South. CNU improves to 16-8 overall and 10-3 in conference play.

Christopher Newport returns to action Saturday as they host Greensboro at 2 pm on Senior Day.
