Women's Basketball Season Ends With A 77-61 Loss To Mary Washington
FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Christopher Newport's women's basketball season came to a close Saturday night as Mary Washington defeated the Lady Captains 77-61 in a Second Round NCAA Tournament game.
The Eagles came out firing in the first half as they shot a sizzling 13-of-23 (57%) from the field, 2-of-3 from behind the arc and 10-of-11 (91%) from the charity stripe. UMW took a 38-18 lead at the half. CNU however did not shoot nearly as well, finishing 8-of-28 (29%) from the floor, 0-of-4 from behind the arc and 2-of-2 from the line.
CNU also committed nine first half turnovers. Of the Lady Captains 12 rebounds, nine were on the offensive end but they could not get anything to fall from the field.
In the second half, the Lady Captains were able to cut the lead to as few as 12 points, when they trailed 73-61 late in the half.
UMW finished the game 25-of-55 (45%) from the field, 4-of-9 (44%) from behind the arc and 23-of-29 (79%) from the stripe. CNU caught fire in the second half, finishing 14-of-27 from the floor. For the game, the Lady Captains were 22-of-55 (40%) from the floor, 0-of-6 from long range and 17-of-20 (85%) from the free throw line.
Mary Washington was led by Debbie Bruen's 20 points and seven rebounds. Lisa Tracy added 14 points and six boards while Liz Hickey added 12.
Shantel Burwell led Christopher Newport with 3 points off the bench. Nikki Rowland and Alicia Bessey finished with 10 each.
UMW has now won 24 straight and improves to 28-2 overall. CNU concludes 2006-2007 with a record of 21-9.
