45-Point Second Half Propels Women's Basketball Past Hood, 80-51
FREDERICK, MD - Christopher Newport's women's basketball team scored 45 points in the second half en route to an 80-51 win at Hood Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Captains led by five at the break, 35-30, and came out shooting 20-of-50 from the field in the second half. CNU began the half on an 18-3 run to lead 53-33 with 12:34 left on Shantel Burwell's jumper, and never looked back.
CNU was also 4-of-8 from long range in the second half and finished 5-of-14 (36%) for the game. The Lady Captains held Hood to just 5-of-24 (21%) shooting from the field in the second half. They also missed all three three-pointers the Blazers attempted and finished 11-of-24 (46%) from the free throw line.
In the first half, both teams struggled shooting from the floor. CNU finished 15-of-42 (36%) from the field, 1-of-6 (17%) from long range and 4-of-7 (57%) from the stripe. Hood was just 10-of-26 (39%) from the floor, 2-of-8 from beyond the arc and 8-of-13 (62%) from the charity stripe.
For the game, the Lady Captains were 35-of-92 (38%) from the floor and 5-of-10 from the line. The Blazers were limited to just 15-of-50 (30%) from the field, 2-of-11 (18%) from long range and 19-of-37 (51%) from the line. CNU also forced 29 Hood turnovers.
The Blazers were paced by Jennifer Willison's 20 points and 14 rebounds. Dana Shook added 10 points, nine rebounds and six assists.
Christopher Newport was led by four players in double figures. Nikki Rowland led the way with 16 points and six rebounds. Candace Bryant contributed 15 points and eight boards, Samantha Davis had 13 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals, Burwell contributed 11 points and Kelly White added six points and 11 rebounds off the bench.
Hood falls to 0-6 on the year while the Lady Captains improve to 4-2. CNU hits the road for Hawaii where they will play in the Hoop N Surf Classic. The Lady Captains will play Benedictine (KS) on Dec. 17 at 7 pm eastern time.
