Women's Soccer Downs NC Wesleyan 5-0, Advances To USA South Conference Tournament Championship Game

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's women's soccer team advanced to the championship game of the USA South Conference Tournament for the third consecutive season season with a 5-0 win over fifth-seed NC Wesleyan Friday night.

Paniz Asgari put the Lady Captains on the board first off a great pass from Leigh Leavitt in the seventh minute. CNU dominated the rest of the first half, out shooting the Lady Bishops 12-0 in the first half alone. The Lady Captains had several opportunities finishing with eight total shots on goal.

The second half was a different story as the Lady Captains scored three times in about six minutes. The first was in the 54th minute when Leavitt scored off a feed from Asgari. Kathleen McCormack gave CNU a 3-0 lead in the 56th minute on a 25-yard floater over the out stretched hands of the NC Wesleyan keeper. Asgari had her second assist on the goal. The final goal in the three-goal span was by Emily Renkin in the 60th minute with Sarah Nuber assisting. The final goal came in the 85th minute off a nice pass from Stefani Brown.

Christopher Newport out shot the Lady Bishops 25-2. NC Wesleyan keeper Bryanne Godfrey had XX saves in goal while the Lady Captains Erin Wojtkun had one save in net.

NC Wesleyan concludes the season 6-9-2 while CNU improves to 13-4-1. The Lady Captains return to action Saturday as they take on Methodist in a repeat of last year's USA South Conference Tournament Championship. Kick-off is set for 3 pm.
