Women's Soccer Runs Past Methodist 7-1, Advances To NCAA Tournament

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's women's soccer team defeated Methodist 7-1 Saturday afternoon in the championship game of the USA South Conference Tournament and will return to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season and third time in program history.

Four Lady Captains scored and three finished with two goals. Leah Leavitt put CNU on top in the third minute off a pass from Hillary Carney. Emily Renkin tied the school record for goals in a season with her 16th in the 7th minute with Paniz Asgari and Ashleigh Dota assisting. Ashley Wellner increased the Lady Captains lead to 3-0 with a goal in the 37th minute unassisted.

In the second half, Asgari scored in the 46th minute off a feed from Amanda Peters. Renkin scored her second goal of the game and 17th of the season and set a new school record for goals in a season and points (38) in a season, eclipsing the old record of 36. The goal was scored in the 50th minute and it was unassisted.

In the 60th minute, Wellner scored her second of the game with Renkin and Trono getting the helpers. Marie Finley scored Methodist's only goal in the 61st minute off a free kick from about 30-yards out. Asgari rounded out the scoring in the 79th minute unassisted.

Asgari was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Renkin, Leavitt, Carney, Lindsey Baskin, Ashley Glover and Wojtkun all earned All-Tournament Team honors.

CNU out shot the Lady Monarchs, 16-12. Amanda Evans had four saves in goal for Methodist hile the Lady Captains Erin Wojtkun made five saves in net.

MC finishes 2005 with a record of 9-11-1. Christopher Newport is now 14-4-1 overall. CNU will find out its fate for who, when and where they will play in the NCAA Tournament when the selections and pairings are released Sunday evening. Check the CNU Athletics website for all the details.
