Women's Soccer Falls To VA Wesleyan 2-1 In First Round Of The NCAA Tournament

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's women's soccer team saw its season come to an end Saturday evening as VA Wesleyan came from behind to defeat CNU 2-1 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Marlins scored twice in the second half after trailing at halftime 1-0. Allie Shannon scored the game-winner on the doorstep in the 88th minute. CNU had several chances to clear the loose ball but could not.

Jaclyn Trono put CNU on top in the 36th minute off a feed from Hillary Carney.

VA Wesleyan tied it in the 66th minute on an unassisted goal by Laura Jackson.

CNU out shot VA Wesleyan 14-9. The Lady Captains Erin Wojtkun had three saves in goal while the Marlins Lindsey Williams had five saves in net.

VA Wesleyan improves to 19-1-1 on the year and will meet the winner of the Catholic/Lynchburg match at 5 pm on Sunday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Lady Captains conclude 2005 14-5-1 overall.
