Women's Tennis Opens 2007 Season With A 9-0 Win At Chowan

MURFREESBORO, NC - Christopher Newport's quest to repeat as USA South champions got off to a good start as the Lady Captains opened 2007 with a 9-0 win at Division II Chowan Sunday afternoon.

Freshmen Liz Thedford, Amanda Ward and Kassi Avent earned their first collegiate victories in Christopher Newport's win at Chowan. CNU lost just five games in all.

In doubles action, Stefanie Leblang and Brittany Stevens (CNU) defeated Krystan Fleming-Christina Eteuati 8-1 at No. 1; Frannie Shivar and Liz Thedford (CNU) defeated Meghan Norris-Kashae Beverly 8-0; and Adele Billings and Amanda Ward (CNU) defeated Rachael Johnson-Mary Tolson 8-0 at No. 3.

In singles play, Leblang (CNU) defeated Fleming 6-0, 6-1; Shivar (CNU) defeated Beverly 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2; Stevens (CNU) defeated Norris 6-0, 6-2; Thedford (CNU) defeated Tolson 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4; Billings (CNU) defeated Eteuati 6-0, 6-0; and Avent (CNU) defeated Johnson 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6..

The Lady Captains improve to 1-0 on the year. CNU returns to action Monday as they host Mary Baldwin on the CNU Courts with start time set for 2 pm.
