Women's Tennis Captures 5-4 Win Over Methodist

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's women's tennis squad defeated Methodist 5-4 Saturday afternoon on the CNU Courts.

It was the first regular season win against the Monarchs for Head Coach Jenny Nuttycombe and the second straight time the Lady Captains have defeated Methodist (CNU defeated MU in the championship of the USA South Tournament last year).

Christopher Newport trailed 4-3 and needed to win at No. 5 and 6 singles in order to capture the victory and maintain its undefeated season. Chandler Long's victory at No. 6 pulled the match even which left freshman Liz Thedford alone on the court with her opponent from the middle of the third set on. Thedford won in three sets to complete the comeback.

In doubles competition, Stefanie Leblang and Lindsey Pantele (CNU) defeated Leighton Bull and Tiffany Tucker 8-3 at No. 1; Frannie Shivar and Brittany Stevens (CNU) defeated Jenny Smith and Lauren Hulse 8-4; Shannon Vivian and Courtney Vail defeated Kelly Clay and Long (CNU) 8-5 at No. 3.

In singles action, Tucker defeated Pantele (CNU) 6-4, 7-6 (7-5); Smith defeated Leblang 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2; Shivar (CNU) defeated Bull 6-1, 6-1; Vivian defeated Stevens (CNU) 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4; Thedford (CNU) defeated Hulse 1-6, 6-0, 6-3; Long (CNU) defeated Vail 6-2, 7-5 at No. 6

Methodist falls to 13-4 overall and 5-1 in the USA South. CNU is now 15-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play.

The Lady Captains return to action Sunday as they host conference foe Peace at 11 am on the CNU Courts.
