Women's Tennis Finishes Regular Season Undefeated, Slips Past Meredith, 5-4
NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's women's tennis team became just the second team in school history to finish the regular season undefeated as the Lady Captains knocked off Meredith, 5-4.
CNU joins the 1978 men's tennis squad (15-0) as the only two teams in school history to finish the regular season undefeated.
In doubles competition, Lindsey Pantele and Stefanie Leblang (CNU) defeated Meredith Roberson and Kathryn Maples 8-3; Morgan Martin and Amanda Bitler defeated Frannie Shivar and Brittany Stevens (CNU) 8-6 at No. 2, snapping the duo's 32-match winning streak. Chandler Long and Liz Thedford (CNU) defeated Sydney Williford and Caitlin Dillon 8-5.
In singles play, Pantele (CNU) defeated Roberson 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1; Maples defeated Leblang (CNU) 6-1, 6-1; Shivar (CNU) defeated Williford 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3; Martin defeated Stevens (CNU) 6-4, 6-1; Bitler defeated Thedford 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5; Long (CNU) defeated Dillon 6-3, 6-1.
Meredith, ranked 20th in the Atlantic South, falls to 12-3. Christopher Newport, 12th in the region, finishes the regular season 19-0.
The Lady Captains return to action Friday as they take on Averett in the quarterfinals of the USA South Tournament in Burlington, NC. Match time is set for 1 pm.
