LACROSSE FALLS IN DIXIE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP 9-8 IN OVERTIME TO GREENSBORO

WINCHESTER, VA – CNU’s lacrosse team fell to Greensboro in overtime Sunday afternoon 9-8 in the Dixie Conference Tournament championship game.

The 2002 Tournament championship was a rematch of the 2001 contest in which GC was an 8-6 winner.

The Lady Pride battled a driving rainstorm to achieve a measure of revenge against regular season champion CNU. The Lady Captains had claimed their first-ever regular season championship with a 12-8 victory over Greensboro on April 20.

Maggie Olson tied the game at 2-2 with an unassisted tally at the 18:12 mark. Greensboro regained the lead one minute later.

The second half was higher scoring, but remained close as the two teams found themselves tied on six different occasions and traded the lead twice. Olson, who had a game-high four goals, tied the game for the last time with 3:43 left when she converted on her second free position opportunity of the half.

Both teams then had excellent scoring chances in the two three-minute overtime periods, and Laura Henry became the hero when she slipped a 10-yard shot past CNU keeper Elizabeth Werbiskis with 58 seconds remaining in the first overtime period.

Kristin Johnson, Elaine Kirby, Sarah Cockerille, and Meagan Pfarr added one goal each.  Kirby also had two assists and Hadley Silver added one assist.

Maggie Olson, Wendy Wilson, Meagan Pfarr, and Carlina Figueroa all made the tournament team.

The Lady Captains out shot Greensboro 27-25.

Elizabeth Werbiskis had six saves in goal.

CNU finishes with a record of 7-9
