The
name Vince Brown and Division III women's track and field success could almost
be used as synonyms.
The long-time Christopher Newport track
coach has put together a record unequalled in Division III, as his Lady Captain
track teams have rolled to 12 national championships since 1987. Since CNU won
its first national title, the indoor championship of 1987-88, there have been a
total of 25 national meets held, and CNU has taken 12.
And, along the way, there have been almost
countless Mason-Dixon and Dixie Conference championships as well as victories
in many other meets.
The success, of course, has come after the
recruitment of great athletes, and Brown has brought to CNU some of the
greatest ever in Division III. Over the years CNU has produced the amazing
total of 59 individual and relay national championships, along with the
staggering total of 369 All-America awards won by over 70 different athletes.
Brown has been recognized for the
achievements of his Captain track teams in many ways, including numerous
regional and national coach of the year awards. In addition, he was presented
with Christopher Newport's Distinguished Service Medallion, an award bestowed
very infrequently by the university.
The graduate of Emory & Henry College
began his coaching career in far southwestern Virginia at Chilhowie H.S., where
he served as head track coach and assistant coach of basketball and football.
He then moved to Blacksburg H.S. where he directed the Indians to one state
title, eight regional and ten district championships. In 1976 he moved to the
Virginia Peninsula to direct the Hampton H.S. track and cross country programs,
and joined the CNU staff in 1980.
His wife, Norma, is Director of Gift
Planning at CNU. They have one daughter, Adrienne, who is 27.
