LYNCHBURG, Va. - It was the last chance to qualify for outdoor nationals or improve your best previous marks, and the CNU track teams made the most of it at the Liberty Twi-Light meet Thursday evening.
CNU had seven automatic qualifying performances and three provisionals as the teams head next for the NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships May 25-28 at Naperville, Ill.
Senior Casey Taylor equaled a school record by qualifying in her fifth individual event, the 400-meter hurdles. She already has automatic qualifying marks in the long, jump, triple jump, high jump and the 100-meter hurdles as well as with the 400-meter relay team.
Meanwhile the women's 1600-meter relay team of Stephanie Andrews, Allison Kelly, Denita Eason and Marilyn Cochran earned a provisional mark of 3:54.55 to qualify for the first time this season and freshman Laneatra Johnson earned an automatic in the triple jump at 38-9. Denita Eason also equaled her mark of 12.17 in the 100.
For the men two jumpers improved their marks in the triple jump. Steven Roberts leaped 49- 3/4 and Matt Mertz 47- 3/4 to better their previous marks, while Damon Talley also had a 49- 3/4 jump. Talley improved to 24- 3 3/4 in the long jump, while the men's 400-meter relay team beat the provisional standard in 41.88. The women's team bettered the automatic standard with a 47.80, but already had a better mark.
