CNU SWEEPS LYNCHBURG AS WEISS GETS 200TH WIN
NEWPORT NEWS, VA – CNU’s softball team defeated Lynchburg College twice Saturday afternoon.
The doubleheader sweep gives CNU Coach Paul Weiss 200 wins in his seven seasons at the helm of the squad.
Christopher Newport took the opener, 8-1, as Vanessa Gray picked up her 10th win of the season. Gray scattered seven hits and allowed just a first-inning unearned run. Gray is now 10-2.
Freshman outfielder Rachel Doyle hit two home runs in the first game. The first came in the second inning, a two-run shot that gave CNU a 2-1 lead. She added a solo shot in the sixth, her fourth of the season and second of the game.
Jen Harrell, who set a school record for putouts in a CNU career, knocked in four runs with a single and double. Vanessa Gray, Dallas Slosjarik and Tammi Perok all had two hits as well.
In the nightcap, CNU defeated Lynchburg 3-1. Page Robbins went the distance for the Lady Captains, allowing just one run on five hits.
Robbins improved to 2-3 on the year.
Renee Sigafoos hit a fourth-inning solo home run, her fourth of the season.
The sweep gives CNU a mark of 15-6 on the season and the Lady Captains have now won six in a row.
CNU plays again on Wednesday at Virginia Wesleyan beginning at 2:30 pm.
