GRAY FIRES PERFECT GAME AS CNU SWEEPS DOUBLEHEADER
Christopher Newport freshman pitcher Vanessa Gray threw a perfect game in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday at Randolph-Macon Women’s College. The Lady Captains won the game, 8-0. Gray improved to 7-2 on the year and helped herself by going 2 for 4 at the plate with a triple.
Gray’s perfect game followed a great pitching performance in the first game. CNU’s Donna Cerami threw a one-hitter in the opener as the Lady Captains blanked RMWC, 14-0. Cerami gave up a hit to the first batter she faced and then was perfect the rest of the way. The first game was shortened to five innings due to the 10-run rule, meaning Cerami and Gray combined to throw 11 consecutive perfect innings. Cerami raised her season mark to 9-2 with the win.
Shortstop Stacey Hundley was 4 for 7 in the doubleheader for CNU, as the Lady Captains improved to 16-5 on the year.
Christopher Newport will host Dixie Conference rival Greensboro Sunday in a 1 pm doubleheader at Captains Field. CNU is now riding a 5-game winning streak.
