SOFTBALL SWEEPS FERRUM, TIED WIN STREAK RECORD

 

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Led by two outstanding pitching efforts by Michelle Kass, the Christopher Newport No. 6 ranked softball team swept Ferrum in a home doubleheader Saturday, 4-0 and 5-1, running its winning streak to 15 which equals the school record.

Kass, who improved to 13-4, hurled a three-hit shutout with nine strikeouts in the opener and the held the Panthers scoreless until two were out in the sixth inning. She struck out seven in the second game. She was called on to pitch both games when undefeated Vanessa Gray was unable to pitch due to an injury.

Also in the second game Dallas Slosjarik singled in the second inning to break the CNU career hit mark with 190.

In game one, C.J. McQueen led off with a single and came all the way around after the ball got by the right fielder. Renee Sigafoos completed CNU’s scoring with a three-run double in the third.

The Lady Captains got three quick runs in the first inning of game two on a two-run single by Andrea Rohde and a base hit by Susan Ishman. That turned out to be all Kass needed. CNU added another in the third on a bases loaded wild pitch and scored in the fifth when Melanie Hose triple and scored on a throwing error as Ferrum attempted to keep her from going all the way around.

Ferrum scored its only run on Kass in both games when Kim Cox doubled and scored on a two-out single by Lindsay Etherton.

The losses dropped Ferrum, which entered the game in third place in the USA South, to 19-12 and 7-5 in conference play.

CNU, which hosts Maine-Presque Isle on Monday at 2:30, is 28-4 and 13-1.
