SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH LYNCHBURG
NEWPORT NEWS, VA
– Christopher Newport and Lynchburg
split a softball doubleheader Friday at Lady
Captains Park.
Lynchburg's 6-3
win in the opener snapped a 19-game CNU winning streak. The Lady Captains
bounced back to blank the Lady Hornets in the nightcap, 8-0, in a game
shortened to six innings due to the eight-run rule.
Lynchburg got off to a fast start,
scoring three runs in the first inning of the opener off CNU starter Vanessa
Gray. CNU tied the game in the third on a three-run triple by Andrea Rohde, who
had a big day for the Lady Captains. Lynchburg
broke the tie in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Andrea Bingler,
and then added two insurance runs on a single from Laura Gonder.
Jen Overstreet went the distance in game one for Lynchburg
to improve to 19-4 on the season. Gray took the loss for CNU, her first of the
year after 17 straight wins dating back to last season.
In the nightcap, Christopher Newport got another great pitching performance
from Michelle Kass, who went the distance allowing
just two hits and striking out 10 Lynchburg
batters. Kass, who now has a CNU
record 156 strikeouts this season, improved to 16-4. Overstreet pitched again
for the Lady Hornets, and took the loss to fall to 19-5.
Andrea Rohde again led the way at the plate for CNU, going 3-for-4 including a
two-run single in the first inning. Lauren Batson went 3-for-4 as well and
scored three runs. Dallas Slosjarik had two hits and
scored three times in the second game.
With the split, Christopher Newport is now 33-5 on the season. The 6th-ranked
Lady Captains return to USA South play on Saturday with a road doubleheader at
Methodist. CNU is currently 13-1 in conference play.
