SOFTBALL OPENS DIXIE PLAY WITH SWEEP OF N.C. WESLEYAN

  NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The softball team opened its Dixie Conference season with a sweep of a doubleheader, winning 2-1 and 8-1.

  The Lady Captains took a 2-0 lead in game one. In the fourth Jen Harrell doubled home Jennifer Nowacki and Nowacki drove in the second with a sixth inning single. Vanessa Gray then worked out of a jam in the seventh when Wesleyan scored its only run and had runners on second and third with one out. Gray struck out eight in the game while Stacey Hundley was 2-3, Nowacki 2-3 and Harrell 2-2 with a double.

  CNU broke open a 1-1 tie in game two with a five-run outburst in the fifth inning. Nowacki then capped the game with a two-run homer in the sixth. With that shot she set the CNU career RBI record with 122, breaking the old mark of 120 set by Cathy Riddick. Nowacki was 2-3 with a double, home run and three RBIs, Dallas Slosjarik was 2-3 and Rachel Doyle 2-2. Barbara Rose picked up the win, her first at CNU.

  The Lady Captains are now 5-2 and 2-0 in Dixie play. They play in the Virginia Wesleyan Tournament Friday and Saturday.
